Got a Tough Prescription? Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses come in Colors TooWhen most people think of contact lenses, the soft disposable type usually comes to mind. However, Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contact lenses can offer many advantages and may be a better choice for you if you have had difficulty wearing soft lenses or eyeglasses, have astigmatism or a strong prescription. RGP lenses are small durable, slightly flexible lenses can be custom designed to fit your eyes in a wide range of parameters. RGPs correct astigmatism and are used for aspheric, toric, or bifocal prescriptions. Sharper Vision The first advantage is sharper vision. For those that demand crisp vision, RGP lenses are considerably better than soft lenses. Some wearers actually correct to better than 20/20 vision. Less Expensive in the Long Run RGP lenses can often be less expensive than soft lens in the long run. With proper care, a pair of RGP contacts can last for years assuming that your prescription does not change. Soft contacts often only last up to two years, or replaceable soft lens require a monthly or yearly outlay of cash. Part of the reason for this longevity is that RGP contacts are hard to break unless they take a direct blow. Soft contacts can be easily torn, even by a fingernail. Easy to Clean Caring for gas permeable lens is very simple. A quick cleaning before putting them in a case with soaking solution along with a weekly cleaning with an enzyme solution are all that is required. Of course, they will need wetting before putting them in your eyes. What about Colors Because RGP lenses are so much smaller than regular soft contacts, tinted RGPs do not change your eye color as effectively. However, there are several brands of colored RGPs to try on the advice of your eye doctor that might give your eyes the color boost you’re looking for: Accucon – blue, dark blue, green Fluoroperm – blue, green, grey, brown, crystal blue Ocusil - blue Downsides RGP lens also have several disadvantages. Comfort is not as good as with soft lens. The wearer may not be able to tolerate having the contacts in his or her eyes during all waking hours. In this case, glasses may be required for part of the day. Wearers must get built up to wearing gas permeable lens for long periods. Unlike soft lens which are usually comfortable immediately, RGP wearers have to go through a period of wearing them for a few hours and then gradually increasing the time to the highest amount that can be tolerated. Once the wearer has adapted, if the lens are not worn for a week or more, the adaptation process may have to be repeated. The sharp vision can sometimes become blurred if the RGP lens is worn for too long at a time. Some people will experience seeing halos around lights at night which can be annoying. Others also experience a phenomenon upon taking out RGP lens where their vision is blurred for a period even after they put on glasses.
